An Automation Engineer is a key element within the Rackspace support infrastructure and is expected to provide a high level of technical support to our customers.  Owns complex automations that enable Rackspace to better serve our customers. Applies creative problem-solving techniques to identify the source of problems; while at the same time keeping the customer aware of every step along the way.  An Automation Engineer is expected to use initiative and standard programming practices to ensure the stability and security of Rackspace’s automated solutions.

  •  Contributes to projects to develop tooling and processes to drive and improve customer experience.
  • Provide mentoring on customer related issues to support.
  • Acts as technical escalation for support and customer.
  • Proven track record troubleshooting cloud based workloads, seeing issues through to resolution, and ensuring follow through with exceptional verbal and written communication. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Proposes and implements system enhancements that will improve the capabilities, performance and reliability of the automations.
  • Coordinates the order and execution of the development, upgrading, monitoring, testing and servicing the automations.
  • Approves action requests and specifies purchase requirements. Negotiates and places orders with common carriers.
  • Defines, designs and implements automated solutions.
  • Builds and supports automations for deployment, diagnostics and remediations run on customer devices. 
  • This will include bulk and on demand solutions for end user use. 
  • Designs and develops automation scripts and programs in support of Rackspace and its customers. 
  • Helps create a series of automated actions that will allow for faster deployments and service restoration for the customer.
  • Develops against current versions of the platforms supported by Rackspace.
  • Formulates new and alternate ideas, approaches, and designs to evolve own feature area or to solve problems encountered in own feature area. 
  • Focuses on a specific feature area or component.  Influences functionalities that make broad contribution to our product and service offerings.  


  • Intermediate experience of programming language C#.
  • Must know how to build text template with loops, regex, if-else conditions, and other basic operations in C#. 
  • Intermediate knowledge of Network fundamentals, including IP assignment, segmentation and. VLANs.
  • Intermediate understanding of HTTP protocol (method/response codes), REST/RESTful web services,  and SOAP.
  • Intermediate experience of JSON and XML.
  • Intermediate knowledge of various relational and non-relational databases like MSSQL, MongoDB, and Cassandra.
  • Must know how to read, write, and update data to databases. 
  • Intermediate knowledge various device platform of how they function and operate including servers, firewalls, load balancers, switches and storage.
  • Understanding and utilizing the under laying technologies to accomplish a task utilizing given tool sets.
  • Intermediate ability to integrate systems via API, scripts or provided connection methods.
  • Intermediate ability to take a logical and analytical approach to problem solving with attention to detail.
  • Intermediate ability to troubleshoot issues that occur due to the technology stack and how it interaction with our environment.
  • Intermediate capability to work with development teams to deliver a finished product.
  • Continually expands knowledge in the areas of new developments and trends; may make recommendations to management on desirable additions and developments.
  • Must be detailed in documenting information and practice good follow through techniques.
  • Excellent problem solving abilities, coupled with a desire to take on responsibility. 
  • Possesses excellent written and verbal communication skills; bi-lingual skills is a plus.
  • Ability to communicate technical info and ideas so others will understand.
  • Ability to make appropriate decisions considering the relative costs and benefits of potential actions.
  • Good ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize work in order to maintain required productivity levels. 
  • Ability to successfully work and promote inclusiveness in small groups.
  • Due to the 24x7 operations of the business, must be able to work a flexible work schedule, may include nights, weekends, holidays, etc. 
  • Ability to provide FANATICAL support.
  • Advanced English level is a must.


  • High school diploma or equivalent required


  • Requires +5 years of experience in systems administration or related field

Physical Demands

  • General office environment. May require long periods sitting and viewing a computer monitor.
  • Moderate levels of stress may occur at times. No special physical demands required.
