Xero is a beautiful, easy-to-use platform that helps small businesses and their accounting and bookkeeping advisors grow and thrive.
At Xero, our purpose is to make life better for people in small business, their advisors, and communities around the world. This purpose sits at the centre of everything we do. We support our people to do the best work of their lives so that they can help small businesses succeed through better tools, information and connections. Because when they succeed they make a difference, and when millions of small businesses are making a difference, the world is a more beautiful place.
We’re looking for an experienced engineer with a focus on deployment pipelines, data and metrics to lead development of Software Delivery Metrics collection and reporting across Xero.
How you’ll make an impact
As a Senior Engineer for Software Delivery Metrics, you’ll work as part of a team and in collaboration with other engineering teams to create software that helps them visualise the throughput and stability of their delivery processes.  You’ll model the standard for engineering excellence at Xero, supporting your team to grow their technical capability and improve development practices.
You’ll have a key role in leading the technical direction of Software Delivery Metrics products, providing collection and reporting of software delivery performance metrics to teams across Xero. You’ll work with teams to use metrics to drill into issues with their deployment pipelines or processes.
You'll help build and manage software that solves engineering problems for internal users.  You will be enabled to seek clarity with technical complexities and be able to demonstrate smart ways to simplify solutions.  You’ll be able to make data-driven decisions that will release value early to solve Xero customers' problems more effectively.

What you'll do

  • Implement technical architecture and design of an internal tool that gathers and presents delivery throughput and stability metrics across a range of deployment tools and processes.
  • Establish how to transform, calculate, and display metrics that are meaningful and helpful to Xero’s engineering teams, based on knowledge of development practices, deployment pipelines, and data presentation.
  • Ensure our solution scales effectively as it gets adopted more broadly at Xero.
  • Work with the Product Owner to collaborate with other teams around Xero, gathering  feedback around the measurement and presentation of data.
  • Solve how to measure delivery throughput and stability for edge cases.
  • Help to grow a team around the metrics tool. Establishing good engineering practices and embedding them in the team.
  • Identify the technical blockers and waste that slow down the team.
  • Maintain in-depth system knowledge across all system boundaries relating to the team’s components as well as hands-on development expertise

What you'll bring with you:

  • Familiarity with using throughput and quality metrics to inform improvement efforts in delivery efficiency and stability.
  • Significant practical expertise in developing and operating a modern tech stack; inc. web apps, APIs, etc.
  • Knowledge of AWS services, including compute, storage, database, and analytics.
  • Experience in data transforms and analytics, including how to go from raw events to a data model and presenting that transformed data in a way that is meaningful at a glance.
  • Experience in working with CI/CD technologies to automate software delivery in the path to production, and incrementally improving delivery processes towards CI/CD.
  • The ability to clearly communicate and advocate for engineering practices, with a focus on DevOps practices.
