Job Specification 
Rackspace gives our customers the flexibility of using one, or a combination of, the public cloud platforms including Amazon's Web Services, Microsoft's Azure, Google's Cloud Platform and Alibaba Cloud. The primary role of the Cloud Deployment Engineer is to provision cloud services and infrastructure for Rackspace customers across these platforms.     Day-to-day responsibilities of the role will include working closely with Solution Architects and customers to finalise technical details for deployment, combine and customise Terraform modules to deploy infrastructure and peer review other deployments prior to customer handover.  In addition, you will be contributing to the wider team by developing our internal knowledge base, sharing best practices, innovation and technical knowledge with your peers. 

Week in the Life of a Cloud Deployment Engineer 
It may sound cliché, but at Rackspace you will find no two days are the same! With over 200,000 customers across a wide variety of verticals, your activities and engagements will be as numerous as they are varied! Here’s a quick diary from Adnan, one of our AWS engineers, to give you a flavour a typical week: Mondays always start with the team huddle. Our engineers and Technical Project Managers from the various offices and countries meet via video conference.  We discuss the week ahead and share items of interest – I find out that this week there is a training session being run by Rackspace’s DevOps team.   I sign up to attend as building stronger knowledge in DevOps concepts is in my Career Development Plan.  For the rest of the day I work on creating an implementation document, a key part of the build process, for my latest customer.  I’m documenting all the important infrastructure configuration details so I can have the customer sign off on the final specification.   The customer has truly embraced a multi-cloud approach and so I spend some time discussing the finalised solution with the Solutions Architect to understand how the design will integrate with the rest of customer’s Public Cloud estate. Tuesday morning I attend the DevOps training session; it proved to be an invaluable session in helping me improve my understanding of DevOps methodologies and how they help transform customer’s business agility.  The session was attended by Rackers from all parts of the business and I follow up this session by planning some further training on this topic.   I’m awaiting feedback from the customer on the imp doc I sent them yesterday so I take the next task from our teams Kanban board, a Peer review for one of my team members.   I spend the afternoon checking their deployment ensuring that the configuration matches the original architectural design and the Implementation Document the engineer produced.  I find a few issues which I quickly rectify and inform my colleague about before passing the QC and produce the handover document for the customer.  Wednesday we have the AWS operational team meeting.  It’s a useful forum to discuss upcoming AWS services and newly released functionality that we may have coded that week.   We primarily deploy using Terraform and with the speed that AWS release new services our team is constantly coding new modules for our library.  I have my regular 121 meeting with my manager.  We discuss the DevOps training I attended this week and my next steps for my personal development. We also discuss what certifications I am planning to attain this year and work out a training schedule to support this. Towards the end of the day I receive confirmation that my customer approves my Implementation document.  I update the Project Manager overseeing the implementation that I’m commencing the deployment activities. Thursday I begin to pull together the Terraform code for the infrastructure I’m deploying. It includes some AWS services I have not had previous experience with so I spend some time researching the requirements and discussing the implementation approach with a senior engineer to ensure I get my Terraform code correct.  The day is spent writing the code, validating, planning, and applying as I go and troubleshooting errors as they arise. Friday morning I attend a 1 hour technical knowledge share session run by one of our Solution Architects.  I then finalise my deployment code and execute the build.  Once it’s complete I update the Kanban board to indicate the build is now ready to be peer reviewed.  In the afternoon we always have the end of week cross functional meeting between the Cloud Engineers and Project Managers. We discuss the wins and challenges of the week and close out with a game of virtual Pictionary.

Knowledge, Experience, and Expertise 
·        Hands-on technical background including a minimum of 3 years’ experience working in a System Administrator, Cloud Engineer or DevOps role ·        Certification in the following cloud disciplines o   AWS SysOps Administrator Associate or Microsoft AZ-103 Azure Administrator or higher o   AWS Solutions Architect Associate or Microsoft AZ-300 Architect Technologies or higher ·        Deep understanding of public cloud technologies (AWS, Azure or Google) including cloud networking principles, IaaS resources, serverless / containers / PaaS resources, monitoring, backup and patching strategies. ·        Strong understanding of general networking principles including knowledge of DNS, TCP/IP, IP addressing and subnetting, security concepts and Standard Network Troubleshooting. ·        Strong Understanding of Operating Systems (Windows or Linux) and OS administration, including Active Directory, shell scripting (Bash or PowerShell) and experience working with database technologies such as MS SQL, MySQL or PostgreSQL etc. ·        Practical knowledge of DevOps principals and tools such as Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD pipelines, configuration management, automation, software development best practices, Git, CircleCI, Azure DevOps, Terraform, Ansible etc.
