Product OverviewThe Cloud Engineering Team based in Manchester is responsible for building Fanatics Next Generation Container Platform leveraging Amazon's Elastic Kubernetes Service (Amazon EKS).  As a Team we're working to deliver a platform that our application partners can depend on, ensuring we deliver the right performance, scalability and reliability when and where its needed.  Kubernetes is at the core of what we do and understand, we lean on Amazon to abstract away the complexity of control plane management so we can focus on delivering capabilities through Kubernetes to our application partners to enable them to deliver code without the fuss and complexity of traditional infrastructure management to enable our business to succeed.  Our engineers are world class and we're seeking multiple positions to join the ranks to help us deliver our Next Generation Platform. Position OverviewAs a Lead (Staff) Engineer on the EKS team you'll be recognised as a Subject Matter Expert in Kubernetes and we’ll expect you to lead the discovery, design and architecture of solutions for complex K8s projects and challenges, working with peers and SMEs across the Globe to deliver our solutions.  You’ll have in-depth industry experience of working with K8s in production with many war stories of past issues that you are able to articulate to how you solved them for you and your team.  Aside to this you will also have a high level knowledge of software development practices and will be well versed in a least 2 languages, building tools to enable delivery of K8s capabilities. 

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Designs, architects, develops, and maintains tools, services, and reusable modules and frameworks using various languages (Terraform, Go) to automate provisioning of cloud infrastructure.
  • Leads in discussions with peers, SMEs and other partners to define, prioritize and breakdown high level requirements into deliverable user stories based around the value delivered.
  • Uses breadth and depth of experience to design/architect Kubernetes capabilities that our partners can easily consume through partnership with your SME peers.
  • Uses experience and knowledge to work with teams to define technical standards and work to ensure this high benchmark is being met.
  • Demonstrates a high level of hands on operation and development of Kubernetes including problem solving to improve the functionality of our container platform.
  • Works within their team to mentor and coach engineers to bring out the best of them from a technical and delivery perspective.
  • Proactively seek out opportunities to ensure we deliver a truly scalable and stable k8s ecosystem. 
  • Manages risk using appropriate techniques to ensure delivery whilst maintain stability of the platform.
  • Owns products and problems from initial inception through to delivery, monitoring and support.
  • Acts as a strong voice in agile practices / ceremonies in the team with a shared work ethic to breakdown and deliver work.
  • Investigates new technologies and their application to solve business challenges.
  • Uses guided and self-development to be constantly improving skills and knowledge.
  • Aides engineering managers to assess skills and gaps across team members and work with them to address them.

Required Experience and Attributes:

  • Subject Matter Expert in Kubernetes with numerous years of production experience, operating at scale.
  • A highly skilled engineer with years of experience of working with Go or other high-level language.
  • Strong skills in cloud technologies (AWS preferable) & using CI/CD frameworks.
  • Ability to architect/design systems at a high level, taking this all the way to delivery.
  • Experience in operating 24x7 large scale operational systems, maintaining availability and performance.
  • A good understanding of agile development processes (Lean/SCRUM/Kanban) and how to apply them.
  • Ability to coach others to increase skills (both technical and not).
  • Strong communication skills with power to engage with different audiences.
