About Opendoor: Are you intrigued by the thought of disrupting a trillion dollar industry through technology? At Opendoor, we’re on a mission to make it simple to buy and sell homes. The traditional process is broken, with an average home taking over 90 days to sell and costing thousands of dollars. We empower everyone with the freedom to move by making buying and selling a home stress-free and instant. We’ve built an exceptional team, seen strong growth, served over 85,000 customers and recently went public! The coming years present a tremendous opportunity for innovation as we explore new frontiers and scale nationwide.
About the Role: We’re seeking an exceptional Rails Infrastructure Engineer to join us as we improve the developer experience of working in our Ruby on Rails monolith. This role will help improve the reliability of critical systems and empower engineers to build software quickly and confidently. Our monolith touches almost everything we do at Opendoor, and so your work will not only enable engineers to build high-quality and reliable products, but also impact the growth trajectory of the company.

As our Rails Infrastructure Engineer, you will:

  • Help us operate our Ruby on Rails monolith that is used by most of Opendoor's engineering teams.
  • Improve the reliability, maintainability, and development experience of working in our monolith.
  • Lead efforts to establish clearer team ownership in our monolith, including code ownership, error tracking, and better API interfaces.
  • Support teams in transitioning from a tightly coupled codebase to a set of separated components with clearly defined APIs.
  • Diagnose and fix problems stemming from complex interactions of a wide range of components in a modern service platform.
  • Guide the broader team in making intelligent and pragmatic technical trade-offs.
  • Act in key support roles during major incidents. Participate in the post-incident review process. Write and maintain runbooks and documentation.
  • Design and implement processes to maintain and improve organization-wide service reliability.

We're looking for teammates who have:

  • Expertise with Ruby on Rails, especially with large, multi-team codebases.
  • Strong coding ability in one or more languages - we mostly write Ruby, Go, and Python at Opendoor, but experience with others is also valuable.
  • Familiarity with monitoring systems such as Datadog.
  • Love improving the efficiency and productivity of your fellow engineers and think of them as your customers.
  • Are excited about achieving ambitious goals, and comfortable paying down technical debt to achieve the desired end state.
  • Experience building for a microservice environment.
  • A passion for learning new technologies and different ways to solve problems.
