Why it Matters: By leveraging your Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) mindset and Infrastructure Engineering expertise, you will play a key role in our mission. You will design, build, and support tools, systems, and workflows that will amplify and enable the efforts of fellow engineers. You will help us optimize our stack and ultimately work toward making our systems faster, more efficient, and able to deal with massive volumes of traffic as we continue to launch worthy products into the world.

Go Deeper: In this role, you will make an impact on Axios through the following responsibilities:

  • Build standards, patterns, and tools that help engineers in other squads make effective use of infrastructure
  • Consult with other squads in a SRE capacity to help leverage infrastructure effectively
  • Configure and manage our software defined networking capabilities including VPCs, firewalls, and routing
  • Configure and maintain core shared services like kubernetes clusters, databases, and CI/CD systems
  • Be security-first when designing and evaluating solutions
  • Help audit and harden our production monitoring and alerting systems
  • Assist in crafting incident management and release coordination processes
  • Mentor less experienced members of the team through pair-programming and empathetic code review

The Details: Ideal candidates will embody an entrepreneurial spirit and passion for Axios’ mission. A DevOps mindset, the ability to ensure production performance at scale, and a passion for data engineering is the target mix. The following skills are a great fit:

  • Experience building and maintaining AWS infrastructure
  • Experience configuring ingress routing and proxies (like Traefik)
  • Strong experience with Kubernetes and Jenkins
  • Experience with monitoring systems (like Grafana and Sentry) and web application firewalls
  • Experience writing scripts in Python or Go
  • Experience using Terraform to deploy Infrastructure as Code
  • Familiarity with Django is a plus
  • A background implementing and supporting Kafka/Spark in production is a plus
  • Supporting data warehousing environments (like AWS Redshift) is a plus
  • An understanding of business continuity and disaster recovery is a plus 
  • Always looking to make systems more efficient, faster and cheaper
  • Fast learner with an ability to work collaboratively
