Have you felt great satisfaction in automating your Cloud Infrastructure management but found yourself intrigued about the challenges of doing it at scale? The Cloud Engineering team is Atlassian's Cloud Centre of Excellence and we’re looking for an engineer who is eager to grow their cloud chops to join the team and help them keep our cloud practices lean and mean.
A typical day in the job will see you using, maintaining, and improving the tooling we have developed to perform tasks such as on/off boarding AWS accounts, security and compliance monitoring, configuration management, and standards enforcement. You will work with the senior engineers to automate repetitive work, respond to incidents, test and roll out new features and service improvements, and assist our internal customers in finding the best solutions to their pain points.
More About the TeamThe Cloud Engineering Team was created to specialise in the design and application of best practice principles to all of Atlassian's cloud hosted services and infrastructure. Currently 5 strong and from a variety of backgrounds, the teams mission is to thoroughly examine current and emerging cloud technologies and practices, with the purpose of optimising their use at Atlassian.
As each year passes our mission becomes more challenging as we strive to optimise the financial, operational, and security practices of Atlassian’s ever growing cloud presence. We build and maintain services that touch every corner of Atlassian's cloud infrastructure, spanning 100’s of accounts, and effecting 1000’s of internal customers.
In a Nutshell:- Cloud Engineering are Atlassian's cloud provider SME’s, it's our responsibility to help everyone from service to budget owners navigate the clouds pitfalls and optimise it's use as we scale- You will own our BAU backlog, and help improve our supporting tools and processes- All engineers will be expected to balance BAU and project work, for this role the blend would be approximately 60/40- While owning our BAU backlog, you will also be encouraged to get involved and contribute to the teams larger projects- This role is perfect for someone who already has a good grasp of developing with Python, but who wants to grow their understanding of AWS, GCP, and Azure
BAU/KTLOActively stay abreast of any system or customer issues arising;Keep a close eye on customer pain and do whatever it takes to remove it, either directly or indirectly;Action items from the BAU backlog driven by operational issues, customer requests, platform improvements;Focus on reducing errors and turnaround time of BAU tasks through improving automation, documentation, and process;Contribute complex fixes under pressure;Support the team during incidents, helping to roll out changes and gather critical data;Feature DeliveryHandle the rollout of new features and frameworks;Review other team members' PRs, spar with the team on possible improvements; helping them to deliver high quality features;Platform ArchitectureCloud Engineering as a team drives platform design and architectural change through team consensus. We seek to surface diverse perspectives from all team members;Work with the senior team members to explore platform architectural changes/improvements and implement POC’s;

On your first day you’ll have experience with

  • 2 years experience in Python
  • Python web frameworks (Django and/or Flask)
  • Experience with integrating services using REST interfaces or similar techniques
  • 1+ years hands on experience with AWS
  • Working in an Agile team

It would be great, but not required, if you have

  • JS (React Preferred) experience
  • Experience supporting other Cloud Providers (GCP, Azure)
  • Familiarity with Atlassian products (Jira, Confluence, BitBucket)

What the role isn't

  • A role for someone already at the top of their cloud game. We’re looking for someone who already has solid experience in software development, but who wants to invest time in growing into the role and build a deep understanding of cloud provider capabilities
  • An operations role. The team focuses on developing features and automating capabilities that will benefit Atlassian at large. You will rarely find yourself making changes for individual Cloud services (other than our own)
