Starling technology works in a hybrid pattern from home and our three offices and we think we will be for a while to come. We’re open to applications from across the UK but our preference is that you’re located within a commutable distance to either our London, Southampton or Cardiff office, so that when we’re able to see each other and collaborate in person again, we’re ready to go!

We are very open about how we deliver software - have a look at our QCon presentations or engineering podcasts to see what our developers have been up to. You can also try coding against your own bank account with us using our open APIs (see the developer site)

Starling engineers love building things, creating new stuff, learning new technologies and working with others across all areas of the business to bring brilliant products and features to life. We’re open-minded when it comes to hiring and we care more about aptitude and attitude than specific experience or qualifications. If you care enough to find elegant solutions to difficult technical problems, we’d love to hear from you.

Our engineering teams already operate with reliability and devops practices in mind. As Starling engineering grows, we want to boost the adoption of these practices. This is where you would come in. The responsibilities of the role include:

  • Design, author, run, and measure systems to improve our observability, incident response and general reliability posture.
  • Collaborate with, support and educate other teams in order to establish key practices in their development lifecycle.
  • Organise and participate in incident investigation and follow-up, to make sure we keep learning from incidents.

An overview of the skills (not all required):

  • Coding mindset, beyond simple scripting, in a major language (e.g., Java, Go, Python) and passion to reduce toil via automation.
  • Good troubleshooting skills and interest in investigating to get to the bottom of problems.
  • Like to take ownership of a feature from the original idea through to production.
  • Experience with observability/monitoring/telemetry. Passionate about tracking progress or regression through indicators and setting objectives (SLIs/SLOs).
  • Good understanding of Linux operating system concepts, containerisation, standard network protocols and running distributed systems at scale in public clouds (we operate in AWS).

  • 33 days holiday (including public hols). You’ll also get your birthday on us
  • 16 hours paid volunteering time a year
  • Private Medical Insurance with VitalityHealth
  • Contributory pension scheme
  • We have many varied social groups set up and run by our employees - ForTheWin (a gaming group), Starling FC, book club and many more!
  • Discounts on cinema tickets, restaurants, shopping and train tickets via a Perkbox membership
  • Access to ‘salary sacrifice’ benefits such as Cycle to Work scheme
  • Gym membership options
