Risk.net is a rare beast: a financial industry publication that thrives on long-form investigative journalism. Our readers represent the full cross-section of the market, and our reporting reflects this – we speak to banks and asset managers, the technology and infrastructure firms that connect them, and the regulators and supervisors that oversee them. This is a great strength, enabling us to piece together complex stories from multiple perspectives and points of view.
Risk.net has a collegiate style – our team of 35 journalists and editors, spread across five editorial desks and three offices, actively collaborate on projects and pool their insights and contacts. We give our journalists the time and resources necessary to produce great stories. Standards are high, but so is management support.
Risk.net is owned by Infopro Digital, a global publishing and events company with over 4,000 employees across 18 countries and annual revenues of over half a billion dollars. Infopro Digital’s financial services unit, known as Risk Global, is a 300-person organisation with offices in London, Hong Kong, New York and Nashville.
The staff writer will help drive coverage for the largest of Risk’s four desks – in terms of both traffic and headcount. The reporting will compose of a mix of regular news stories, deeply reported features, profiles and data-led articles. The role requires at least two years’ financial reporting experience, preferably within capital markets, but not exclusively.
The successful applicant must be a good contact builder and be able to generate their own story ideas.
Traditionally an OTC derivatives publication, Risk’s coverage has evolved along with those markets – encompassing flow trading, as well as structured and exotic products. For flow, stories may focus on market structure, electronic and automated trading, as well as the cash and listed products that are traded alongside standardised OTC derivatives.
In the structured and exotic space, coverage tends to focus more heavily on products, pricing, valuation and risk management. In all cases, Risk’s coverage stands out by virtue of its depth. We may not always be first, but we will always offer more insight and analysis. Our readers represent the full cross-section of the market, and our reporting reflects that – we speak to banks and non-bank liquidity providers, asset managers, hedge funds, pension funds, insurers, corporate treasurers, regulators and supervisors, exchanges, trading platforms and clearing houses, lawyers, consultants, and software vendors.
This is a great strength, enabling us to piece together complex stories that have multiple stakeholders. It also means we have to be sensitive to a story’s nuances: there may not always be a clear winner, or a clear loser. As derivatives trading has become more transparent, our Markets stories increasingly make use of public datasets – and we expect this kind of reporting to become increasingly important. In 2020, the Markets desk expanded to incorporate coverage of foreign exchange trading – for spot and derivatives.
The desk’s reporting on these topics appears in Risk.net as well as a sister title, FX Markets, and the staff writer would be expected to lean into this asset class more than others.
