Senior Site Reliability Engineer

About You

You really dislike toil. You often catch yourself wondering why you have to do the same chore over and over again by hand. By the third time, no, really by the second time, you are already seeing patterns and coming up with ways to automate work. That’s what computers are for after all, and you want to create a platform that makes it easy for your entire team to leverage their power.

You know the unexpected can happen, but still really don’t like avoidable surprises. You have alerts that tell you when packages are delivered at home, you’ve measured when exactly the neighborhood store restocks your favorite fresh foods, and most importantly, you believe in full observability of the systems and software your team owns.

Software is constantly evolving, and so are the environments on which they run. You’ve developed hard won experience rearchitecting systems and moving to new infrastructure and designs. You take great care helping your teammates avoid some of the scarier paths to scaling their software, and insist on making the setup you use resilient and self healing. Like avoiding toil, you really don’t want to get paged at 3AM for something a machine could have done.

At the end of the day, you know that reliability is not a specialization. It is a team sport and you lead by example within your team and across the company to uplevel everyone. Data is your fuel, and you make sure we collect it from day one. Seeing data isn’t enough though, and you keep us honest by being transparent and accountable to ourselves and our customers.

The Position

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer with site reliability experience who can help us grow a new global team building our core AWS based infrastructure, scale our systems, introduce automation and observability, develop our continuous delivery platform, and uplevel our engineering team’s reliability/security/quality focus. We are growing our sunrise/sunset team, and looking specifically for folks located in the greater London, UK area. 

Our Software Engineers (Site Reliability) work closely with our Chief Architect, VP of Engineering, Staff SRE and other SREs to design, build, and operate our AWS and Open Source Software based cloud architecture and product development platform. You are hands on helping to reduce toil and increase automation via code and strategic blends of roll-your-own and managed services. You utilize your knowledge and skills to help your team elevate their work in reliability, scalability, and simplicity. You are guided by utilizing modern DevOps, SRE, and AppSec practices. You lead by example, share knowledge openly, and work closely with engineering and product leaders, customer support, and the rest of Swoogo to build the right global infrastructure to provide excellent service to our customers.

Must-haves

• 5+ years designing, implementing, and growing reliable and cost effective cloud infrastructure architecture using automation, containerization, and infrastructure as code (with AWS, Terraform, one or more scripting languages, containers, modern CI/CD tooling)
• Comfortable writing production software and systems in Go, Python, or other languages
• Intimate knowledge of full-stack software and system observability, telemetry, and operations principles and practices (using open source and commercial tools)
• Experience building and operating scalable and highly-available multi-region applications platforms that are resilient and deployed in a scalable service mesh.
• Have production Kubernetes experience and can guide teams in its best practices.
• Highly collaborative and able to successfully work with cross-functional teams with excellent communication skills (written and verbal).

Nice-to-haves

• A degree (BS/BA) in a STEM field
• Have exposure to process and procedures involving compliance (e.g. PCI, ISO27001, SOC2) and secure coding standards
• Experience with PHP web applications, Go backend services, and Python tools and are comfortable with common testing, automation, and instrumentation libraries
• Experience with NoSQL and RDBMS DBs a plus (highly available Redis, PostgreSQL)
• Experience on full ownership, on-call SaaS oriented product team a plus
