The Property Controller will oversee our accounting function and act as a business partner and advisor to property management, asset management and business development teammates on all accounting related matters. This leader will also handle acquisition and disposition accounting for our properties and internal and external financial reporting for our owned assets and third-party owners. The Controller will coach and mentor our property accounting team and is comfortable communicating directly with executives.  

What you'll do:

  • Lead the property accounting capability, including acquisition and disposition accounting for our properties.
  • Oversee preparation of financial reports for owners, management, investors, and banks, ensuring all reporting is completed timely, accurately, and in compliance with regulatory standards, policies and procedures, and owner requirements.
  • Serve dozens of owners across multiple states; find scalable ways to accommodate their unique requests.
  • Manage and oversee all aspects of financial audits and lender communication.
  • Provide leadership to the property accounting team: coaches and mentors team members on achieving goals and developing necessary skills that drive results; Identifies team goals and evaluates team progress.
  • Provide support and guidance for the accounting, asset management, and field teammates in the analysis, reconciliations, and reporting of all financial activity.
  • Support Business Development by reviewing draft management agreements, analyzing the accounting implications and recommending alternatives related to various deals.
  • Support Finance in financial planning and budgetary processes.
  • Develop and implement accounting policies, procedures, and controls.
  • Act as a proactive business partner to all department leads and communicate accounting initiatives.
  • Lead and execute a variety of special projects including automating and increasing efficiencies of processes, developing training materials, and creating value-add reports.

What you bring:

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field
  • 10+ years overall experience with 5+ years in property accounting for a 3rd party property management company
  • At least 3-5 years experience leading a team
  • Direct experience serving third party property owners
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written
  • Accuracy and attention to detail while working at a fast pace and under tight deadlines
  • Excellent computer skills:
    • General understanding of advanced software accounting systems
    • Excellent working knowledge of Excel
    • Knowledge of Resman and Yardi is a plus
  • Strong attention to detail with unwavering integrity
