About Us
At Matterworks we are building AI tools to extract insights from the ever-growing corpora of biological data and to unlock opportunities in therapeutic discovery, development, and manufacturing. We are building large-scale deep learning models of biological data to predict the phenotype and behavior of biological systems.
Role Description
In this role, you will work directly with our Lead Machine Learning Engineer to design, develop, and deploy novel architectures and algorithms. This is an opportunity to delve deep into foundation models of biological data, working with top pharma to solve problems in biopharmaceutical development. You will be part of an interdisciplinary team of scientists and engineers working to design the data generation pipeline, curate datasets, benchmark algorithms, analyze assay results, and deploy models.
We are looking for a motivated and inquiry-driven candidate who is passionate about developing and applying cutting-edge deep learning to previously unsolved problems in the life sciences.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and apply deep learning architectures, tools, and techniques to model complex data and systems.
- Independently lead and run research projects, while maintaining close communication with team members.
- Remain current with respect to literature; proactively identify, assess, and internalize promising novel architectures/algorithms, methods, tools, and external vendors.
About You
- PhD or MS in Computer Science, Data Science, Bioengineering, Mathematics, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Machine Learning, or related fields.
- Fluency in Python and standard deep learning tools and packages (e.g. PyTorch, Jax, TensorFlow).
- Familiarity and practical experience with recent deep learning architectures such as transformers and deep reinforcement learning.
- Ability to manage multiple concurrent, fast-paced projects and work cross-functionally with software engineers and analytical scientists.
- Strong interpersonal skills, excellent written and verbal communication, and the ability to clearly explain complex problems and their solutions to scientists outside the machine learning field.
- Motivated and team oriented, with an ability to thrive in an entrepreneurial and multidisciplinary environment.
Nice to Have
- Experience with modern development and deployment tools (e.g. Docker, Git, Linux, AWS, GCP).
- Background in biology, chemistry, physics, or other scientific fields.
- Experience developing ML models of complex phenomena in biology, chemistry, or physics.
- Understanding of mass spectrometry, metabolomics, or proteomics.
- Knowledge of human-in-the-loop types of deployments.
- An established record of innovative research achievements in machine learning/bioinformatics reported in top-tier journals and patent applications.
