The Infrastructure Engineer works in MBTA’s Customer Technology Department (CTD) as part of the infrastructure team to ensure the smooth and secure delivery of public transit software applications.  

CTD’s applications cover a wide range of transit technology use cases, from the generation of arrival time predictions for subways, and internal tools for managing the flow of bus service, to the MBTA’s primary customer-facing website and more!   

In this role, you will apply modern DevOps practices using industry-standard tools such as Terraform, AWS, Docker, and GitHub Actions.

Skill requirements:

  • Tier-1 Support On-Call Participation (~5 weeks/year) 
  • Infrastructure Automation 
  • Scripting Languages (such as Bash and Python) 
  • Terraform Configuration and Operations 
  • Advising Application Teams on DevOps Tasks 
  • Understanding of AWS Permissions 
  • Orchestration of AWS Serverless Services (specifically ECS Fargate, Lambda) 
  • AWS Infrastructure Security 
  • Docker-based Deployment 
  • Continuous Integration Configuration 

Day to day experience:

  • CTD’s Infrastructure Team works collaboratively to triage, prioritize, and execute infrastructure tasks using Asana. Typically, being online from 9-5 and available in Slack for asynchronous discussion and regularly scheduled team meetings via Microsoft Teams. Tasks range in complexity, from reviewing another team member’s PR request to updating the core infrastructure of a customer-critical service. 

Place inside company/reporting structure:

  • CTD is a relatively flat organization. In this role, you report to the Director of Engineering and work collaboratively with a Senior Infrastructure Engineer, mid-level Infrastructure Engineer, and our hands-on Principal Architect. In addition, you will have frequent touchpoints with the 25 software and data engineers working across 10 product teams which all address different aspects of transit riders’ experience.

Hiring process:

Required experience and certifications:

  • At least 3 years of experience working in a DevOps or infrastructure role, using AWS and Terraform. 

Location:

This role can be 100% remote.

Compensation:

Pay rate range is $84 - $115 per hour (W-2), up to 1880 hours per year.
