About this role
M-KOPA's legal team treats its partners like clients and often advise on range of corporate, commercial and compliance matters in scaling start-up enviroment.
The Group Data Protection Officer will ensure we are compliant with relevant data protection legislation in the countries in which we operate (including Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa & UK).
It is a fully Remote role, within the following time zone (UTC -1 / UTC+3) and you will report to the Group General Counsel and Chief Compliance and Risk Officer. #LI-Remote
You're excited about this opportunity because you will
- You'll manage our privacy programme and framework throughout the entire organisation.
- Be the leading contact within the organisation for members of staff, regulators, and any relevant public bodies on issues related to data privacy.
- You'll identify, analyse M-KOPA regulatory requirements to create policies, procedures, and controls to ensure that M-KOPA is compliant with our data privacy laws and requirements.
- You will guide implementation of essential elements of data privacy legislation, such as the principles of data processing, data subjects' rights, data protection by design and by default, records of processing activities, security of processing, and notification and communication of data breaches.
- Monitor performance, conduct data privacy audits to ensure compliance and provide advice on the impact of data protection efforts.
- Raise awareness, design training plans and provide data privacy advice and support for members of staff, including through the implementation of privacy committees or working groups.
- Monitor industry best practice and trends for data privacy and ensure that changes are implemented in the organisation
- Identify and use opportunities to improve privacy processes and generally promote a culture of data privacy compliance across all units of the organisation.
We're excited about you because you have experience with
- You will be knowledgeable on Data Protection laws, regulations and best practices including General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) and its progeny legislation, POPIA, together with international standards including NIST, ISO and Generally Accepted
- You'll have minimum of five (5) years' experience working in data protection compliance or a related field
- History of implementing data privacy programs and embedding data privacy cultures within multinational organisations
- History of reporting into a Board of Directors
- Experience with data processing operations, including information systems, data security and data protection needs
- Experience in managing data incidents and breaches.
- You'll be experience in change and project management skills
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited university
- IAPP (or similar) certifications
