One Acre Fund works to improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers. In Ethiopia, we engage farmers in agroforestry and community-based seed multiplication to increase farmers' incomes and improving farming systems. Engaging with local actors at every step but bringing ideas from outside, we are making rural farming more market-friendly and environmentally sustainable. Our Ethiopian partner farmers have planted more than 45 million trees, produced over 2000 MT of improved teff seed and improved the futures of hundreds of thousands of their neighbors. In Ethiopia alone, our permanent team numbers over 150 with nearly 1000 rural seasonal staff supporting them. Our Ethiopia headquarters are in Addis Ababa and we have a large program office Bahir Dar, plus several smaller field offices.

About the Role

The Ethiopia program is poised to serve over 230,000 farmers in 2023, grow 20 million trees and scale the seed multiplication program. By 2025, we aim to serve 500,000 farmers and plant 100 million trees.

The Program Design Lead will be an essential part of our Agroforestry team, tasked with building the effectiveness of our field and support staff of the Agroforestry Program (100+ full time employees). You will report directly to the Deputy Country Director, and you will directly manage (at least) two key deputies.

Responsibilities

Program Design: You will design and trial operational improvements to our programs to generate additional impact and/or make our programs more cost efficient. This could include: 

  • Increasing uptake and survival of trees by farmers through improved sales and marketing, deployment of social behavior change and communication (SBCC) techniques. 
  • Improving field team operational efficiency and achievement of KPIs.
  • Leading mass marketing campaigns to improve farmer adoption of planting techniques.
  • Exploring market access channels to improve farmer revenue.

Execution: You will work through your team to coordinate the execution of activities necessary to bring trees into the hands of our farmers. This includes:

  • Tree Nursery Operators recruitment, training and retention.
  • Management of rural marketing and sales projects.
  • Coordination with our Logistics/Procurement Team for input orders and deliveries.
  • Observe program quality and implement quick interventions to improve it.

Lead a Team of Leaders: You will work with others to set department goals, and then guide your team to achieve these through clear expectations, support and coaching. You'll need to ensure your team has development plans and opportunities for growth.

Budget: You will support annual budgeting for the Agroforestry program (around $1.8M) and lead cost efficiency improvements.

Qualifications

Across all roles, these are the general qualifications we look for. For this role specifically, you will have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Economics, Business, Management, Forestry, Agriculture or other related field. 
  • 5+ years of experience in a dynamic organization working on program design, sales, marketing, training, and/or product innovations.
  • Experience employing social behavior change and communication (SBCC) techniques to drive uptake of a product or service.
  • Experience coordinating projects across multiple departments.
  • Experience in data analytics to guide decision-making.
  • Prior experience working with rural development programs required.
  • Willingness to travel to remote kebeles required.
  • Strong interest in agriculture and agroforestry is a must. Previous experience in these fields is an added advantage.
  • Amharic and English required.
