The Role:

This internship will provide an excellent opportunity to apply relevant biochemistry and chemistry knowledge from the classroom towards the preclinical development of lifesaving gene editing therapeutics. In this position, you’ll learn the basic theory and workflows of protein purification, operation of relevant equipment (AKTA), and preparing supplies. You will be observing and assisting experienced senior scientists in the laboratory with the goal of achieving laboratory independence by the end of the internship. The candidate will also learn how to properly record experimental data within an electronic lab notebook (Benchling) and present that data to fellow scientists. This internship is an excellent opportunity to learn about the growing field of gene therapy while also gaining valuable experience about performing research from scientific experts.

Here’s What You’ll Do:

  • Purify recombinant proteins and AAV capsids from bacterial or mammalian cells using an automated FPLC system (AKTA)
  • Perform bioanalytical assays (SDS-PAGE, etc.) upon generated samples
  • Prepare appropriate buffers and other solutions
  • Design, preparation, and execution of experiments
  • Data capture, analysis, and documentation
  • Present data to fellow scientists

Requirements:

  • Working towards a BS or BA degree in chemistry, biological science, bioengineering, or equivalent
  • Hands-on experience with bioanalytical assays is preferred but not required
  • Organized, independent, and collaborative
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
