Director of Communications and Marketing

The Director of Communications and Marketing is responsible for all facets of marketing and communications for Second Nature. This includes planning, development and implementation of Second Nature’s communications, marketing, and public relations activities. 

The ideal candidate will be a strategic leader and systems thinker who creatively connects our marketing and communications activities with the organization’s mission to accelerate climate action in, and through, higher education. This position will also develop and lead the marketing and communications objectives in our newly completed “Climate Leadership 3.0” strategic plan. 

As a member of the senior management team, the Director of Communications and Marketing will be involved in organization-wide strategic planning, program evaluation, and management. The position reports to the President. 

 

Position Responsibilities

Strategy & Management  

  • Lead the design, development, and implementation of a Marketing and Communications Plan
  • Ensure the goals and objectives in the Marketing and Communications Plan are achieved 
  • Ensure that evaluation systems are in place related to these goals and objectives for updating and reporting progress
  • Work with the Director of Finance & Operations to develop annual budgets that ensure the appropriate systems, staffing and procedures are in place to support marketing and communications
  • Collaborate closely with program staff to design and implement communications strategies and effective messaging for organizational and project-specific goals
  • Work with Second Nature’s DEIAJ Associate and program staff to ensure our marketing and communications reflect our organizational DEIAJ values and reach diverse audiences
  • Maintain key relationships at member institutions and organizational partnerships that support organizational marketing and communication goals.  

Brand Management  

  • Ensure that brand identity, messaging and marketing and communications strategy are consistent across all organizational efforts (programming, development, network support)
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate marketing and communications campaigns related to programs, special events, and donor cultivation

Content Strategy and Management    

  • Lead the strategy and generation of engaging digital content on Second Nature’s website, social media, and email channels that leads to measurable improvements in stakeholder engagement and action 
  • Work with staff in the development, distribution, and maintenance of any print and electronic collateral including, but not limited to the annual Impact Report, case studies, brochures, newsletters, and white papers

Press and Public Relations  

  • Identify trends, monitor current events and influencers to anticipate opportunities for Second Nature to engage in and/or lead the national conversation on climate action and higher education
  • Guide the strategy on press outreach, including messaging in press releases, creation of press kits and materials, interview preparation, and responses to media requests
  • Develop close partnerships with members of the media

Fundraising and Events

  • Advise the President on development opportunities, grant proposals, and fundraising appeals and activities.
  • Occasionally represent Second Nature at public events

 

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree preferred in the areas of communications and marketing related field (e.g. marketing, business administration, management, advertising, journalism, and/or communications) or at least five years of professional experience, including strategic leadership of marketing and communications, with strong preference given to candidates with a background at non-profit organizations or higher education institutions focused on climate or sustainability
  • Demonstrated skills, knowledge and experience in the successful development and execution of marketing campaigns, communications and public relations activities  
  • Strong creative, strategic, analytical, organizational and personal skills
  • Experience overseeing the design and production of online and print collateral and publications  
  • Excellent oral communication, writing and editing skills  
  • Proven track record in developing a broad spectrum of proactive media relations campaigns and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively to diverse audiences  
  • Relevant computer program literacy required – SalesForce and Adobe Design Suite experience preferred  
  • Excellent people skills, with experience collaborating in a multi-disciplinary, diverse, and dynamic team  
  • Flexible and a self-starter; able to manage multiple concurrent projects while also being highly detail-oriented with an attention to quality  
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a commitment to Second Nature’s mission to accelerate climate action in, and through, higher education

Position Classification, Salary and Benefits

This is a full-time (40 hours/week), salaried position. Compensation will be commensurate with experience within a range of $80,000 to $95,000. This position is fully remote with minimal travel requirements (1-2 times per year).

A competitive benefits package is provided. Benefits include 80% organization paid health insurance, 3% retirement plan match and a $200 monthly work-from-home stipend.
