Founded in 2013, CardFlight is a leader in payment acceptance for small and medium businesses throughout the country. Since our founding, CardFlight has built an easy, safe and secure mobile point-of-sale platform for merchants and their partners. The CardFlight platform evolved from our original Software Developer Kit into SwipeSimple, our branded product solution. Our problem-solving culture leads to results and we have been first-to-market with important industry advances such as the deployment of EMV Quick Chip. Our continuously enhanced product iOS and Android-based applications and SwipeSimple web experience has enabled us to serve a diverse range of small businesses (services, retail, food and beverage, etc.) in all 50 U.S. states.

With new features and expanding hardware options, SwipeSimple today enables over 120,000 small merchants to accept payment in all the ways their businesses demand: mobile, in-store, and in back-office settings. Today, CardFlight is responsible for over $10B worth of transactions annually. SwipeSimple is sold exclusively through the merchant acquirer and Independent Sales Organization channel. Ten of the top 25 merchant acquirers in the US recommend SwipeSimple as their small business payment solution.

Role and Responsibilities

Reporting to CardFlight’s Founder & CEO, Derek Webster, the CTO will be responsible for leading the engineering organization implementing best practices and processes to build a sustainable team and technical infrastructure for future growth. The CTO will be responsible for proactively addressing existing scaling challenges and technical debt while also developing new CardFlight products. The CTO will be responsible for thoughtfully scaling the engineering organization, guiding and mentoring mid-level and junior members cross-functionally.

  • Lead & manage the Engineering organization that primarily works remotely across the United States, leading strategy for technology platform, channel partnerships and direct to merchant relationships
  • Build and maintain a highly engaged engineering organization and culture; build a process for continuous learning and culture that ensures a bias to action and accountability
  • Create an organization structure that meets the needs of a nimble and fast-growing team
  • Assess technical gaps within engineering organization and create a data-driven strategy for future hiring
  • Oversee the identification, selection, and implementation of technology solutions to meet current and future needs
  • Develop, track, and control the creation of annual operating and capital budgets for purchasing, staffing and operations
  • Work closely with Product, Marketing, Business Development, and Operations to define and deliver new products and enhancements
  • Nurture and enhance our Engineering culture of continuous improvement, ownership, transparency, and quality execution
  • Represent the Engineering perspective in leadership team meetings and when making hiring decisions; oversee Engineering recruiting to budgeted headcount
  • Build CardFlight’s Engineering brand as an outstanding place for career development
  • Manage and optimize infrastructure assets to balance cost and performance
  • Create overall technology standards and practices and ensure adherence across our product set
  • Track, analyze, and monitor technology performance metrics
  • Oversee all system design and changes in system architecture
  • Keep engineering team and broader organization of new trends and best practices in the technology landscape

Professional Qualifications

  • Ability to work effectively with shared leadership, governance, and build alignment around cross-functional goals
  • Strong project management and execution oriented mindset, ability to deliver projects on time and within budget.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with hands-on project management skills
  • Familiarity working with AWS, Ruby on Rails, iOS and Android
  • Proven track record of leading and scaling technology teams in a fintech or related industry
  • Experience being responsible for high rigor and high complexity systems, preferably financial systems and regulations, including compliance and security is preferred
  • Ability to break down complex problems into clear action plans
  • Empower others to act, set plan, assign owners, provide tools and context, hold team members accountable and oversee things to ensure that are done at a high quality level
  • Strong understanding of current and emerging technologies and their potential applications to the financial services industry
  • Strong business acumen and ability to align technology strategy with business goals
  • Excellent written, oral and presentation skills

In addition to a competitive base salary, this position is also eligible for cash bonus and equity awards based on factors such as experience and performance.
