Chief Marketing Officer
 
 
 
Position Summary:
 
As a member of Appen's executive leadership team, you will be responsible for the company's core marketing strategy and will share the responsibility to drive growth. In addition, you will lead a global team of marketing professionals, enabling marketing strategies and capabilities across all Appen business units and markets globally. You will be responsible for translating Appen’s strategy into innovative products and digital, data, and technology business solutions. The CMO will the own vision, strategy, blueprint, delivery and operations of Appen’s Marketing team. The CMO must have experience at high-growth B2B companies, able to own all areas of marketing to include, demand generation, marketing, branding, communications, and channel marketing.  

This is a hybrid role with our office location in Toronto, Canada.

Responsibilities

  • Define and own vision, strategy, and roadmap to build marketing ecosystem that offers competitive advantage and delivers intuitive and personalized customer experience for all our critical audiences all in service of driving Appen’s narrative and brand in the market
  • Understand industry and innovative technology trends to effectively prioritize and apply existing and emerging technologies to enable new and evolving business and operating models.
  • Lead and drive Brand Marketing, Product Marketing, Demand Generation, PR Communications, Marketing Operations and Creative Services
  • Communicate clearly and succinctly in a variety of settings and styles, at all levels of the organization; can get messages across that have the desired effect.
  • Effectively articulate vision, inspiring and influencing others. Provide consultative advice, education, and guidance across all levels within Appen.
  • Develop and manage strategic partnerships and investments with leading digital, data and social platforms to deliver significant value to the enterprise, leveraging the respective strengths of Appen and each strategic partner.
  • Create and drive Appen's positioning as a leader within the AI industry
  • Establish rapport with executive leaders,board members, analysts, and external influencers
  • Develop marketing goals and objectives that align to overall company strategy for both short-term and long-term optimization.
  • Analyze Appen's marketing strategy and develop the context of "how has this evolved" to "where we need to go".
  • Possess balance of organizational leadership skills, with the people skills to empower and unlock the potential of the team.
  • Take responsibility for annual Marketing plan, strategy, and team
  • Identify and plan impactful marketing strategies
  • Hire, manage and coach a high-performing marketing team
  • Lead marketing campaigns that meet business objectives and drive leads
  • Manage marketing budget and expenditures
  • Track competitors and evaluate their strategies and positioning and devise counterstrategies
  • In conjunction with Regulatory Affairs, serve as an evangelist for our products through thought leadership and blogging, social media, and speaking
  • Keep the company up to date with market trends and competition

  • Collaborate with our Product teams to understand release schedules, partnerships, and profitability to drive upsell/cross-sell against high margin and high opportunity products that meet our customers' growing needs
  • Be a customer advocate.
  • Maintain a strong sense of confidentiality and data privacy.
  • Track record of influencing and leading successful cross-functional transformation efforts with colleagues at all levels of the organization, including senior and executive leadership. 
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate complex information into compelling, logical, and relevant narratives for executives, peers, customers, and partners.
  • Ability to quickly gain credibility with senior management and effectively influence and collaborate with others.
  • Create and drive Appen's positioning as a leader within the Ai industry
  • Establish rapport with executive leaders, board members, analysts and influencers
  • Develop marketing goals and objectives that align to overall company strategy for both short-term and long-term optimization
  • Align with functional marketing leaders to determine and track KPI's
  • Establish operational cadence
  • Possess balance of organizational leadership skills, with the people skills to empower and unlock the potential of the team

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Marketing or related field or equivalent job experience.
  • 20+ plus years' marketing experience within high growth B2B organizations; (AI experience strongly preferred).
  • Experience as CMO at $800mm to $1.5B revenue company
  • 8+ years in Infrastructure, Software and or IT Services industries preferred.
  • 8+ years of experience in a leadership capacity with increasing scope of responsibility.
  • Proven success as a data-centric, innovative, business-minded, highly strategic product (or line of business) marketing or marketing technology executive, preferably in the AI space or other technology industry.
  • A track record of success in attracting, developing, and motivating top talent from inside and outside of the organization, mentoring, coaching and growing others.
  • Strong data competency, with ability to synthesize data and insights into succinct strategies and action plans
  • An understanding of competitive landscape, best practices, platforms and tools
  • Strong understanding of creative efficiency and customer-centric design
  • Expertise in bringing cross-functional team members together to advance retention and growth goals, and in helping other teams bring results through close collaboration
  • Prior experience leading/owning product marketing, demand generation, or other GTM functions such as Sales or Customer Success
  • Creative, growth mindset, speedy, innovative, fail fast mentality
  • Strong understanding of Demand Generation and top of funnel marketing
  • Strategic thinker with excellent product marketing expertise
  • People-first leader who can recruit and develop excellent Marketing talent
  • Ability to understand the changing dynamics of Marketing and when to invest in brand, drive pipeline or collaborate with product
